Upgrade Your Home’s Value & Efficiency: Start with Casement Window Replacement, Part 1
Replacing casement windows with double hung windows is a great way to update a space while still enjoying the advantages of windows that open and close. Double hung windows offer improved energy efficiency, improved ventilation, and better noise suppression, so they are an effective solution when considering window replacements.
In this first article, we will discuss step-by-step instructions on how to remove the old casement windows and prepare the wall opening for the new double hung window. It is important to exercise caution and safety measures when removing the old windows and begin by wearing protective gloves and overalls.
Begin by locating and removing the hinges from the casement window. For a loose pin hinge, use a flat blade screwdriver to loosen the screws or position a tack puller beneath the top ball of the pin and gently hammer it outwards. On the other hand, for a fixed pin hinge, undo the screws that hold the leaf of the hinge to the sash or the frame. After removing the hinge, remove the hardware from the jamb located inside the window by pulling out the nails with a claw hammer.
The next step is to remove the window from its frame. To do this, you can use a putty knife to remove the molding that is used to reinforce the window in its position. Put the putty knife in the gap between the molding and the extension jam and gently tap the putty knife using a wooden mallet or hammer. Make sure to work your way around all four sides of the window. When finished, carefully pull out the window using a crowbar and set it aside in a safe place.
Remove any old paints and caulk from the wall opening with a stiff brush and a chisel, if needed. Then, check the surface for any cracks, seals, or gaps and make the necessary repairs. For any uneven surfaces or imperfections, use coarse sandpaper to smoothen the surface and remove the debris with a soft brush. When finished, apply a coat of caulk to the wall, jamb, and sill and let it dry before adding a second layer.
Finally, ensure that you have the right tools and equipment and are working safely. Wear protective gear and use a sturdy ladder when necessary when removing windows from higher up positions. Taking the time to carefully and thoroughly prepare the wall space for the new double hung window investment will lead to increased satisfaction in the efficiency and overall aesthetic of the new windows.
