Unlock the Secrets to Easier DIY Oil Changes: Step-by-Step Instructions to Keep Your Car Purring
Changing your own oil is one of the best ways to maintain the health of your car. Not only is it relatively inexpensive, it can also save you from the hassle of taking a trip to the mechanic. So, if you’re new to oil changes, here is a step-by-step guide on how to change your oil:
First, purchase an oil change kit from Amazon to get started. Your car’s owner’s manual should tell you the amount of oil your engine requires, as well as the type that is best for it (e.g. conventional, synthetic). You’ll also need an oil filter specifically designed for your vehicle, and an oil drain pan. If you’re working in tight spaces, it’s also a good idea to grab an oil filter wrench.
Next, lift up your car on a car jack, or use jack stands for added safety. Once the wheel is elevated, locate the oil drain plug, which is usually located on the bottom of the oil pan. Place your oil drain pan underneath the plug and use a properly sized wrench to loosen and remove it. The oil from the engine will begin to flow; just be sure to give it time until all the oil is drained into the pan.
After the oil is completely drained, replace the drain plug and tighten it with a wrench. Make sure to give it an extra ¼ turn for a more secure fit. Then, move your oil drain pan under the oil filter. Use your oil filter wrench to rotate the filter counterclockwise to remove it from the engine. Place the used oil filter into the drain pan, then open the new oil filter and lightly coat its rubber gasket with a bit of new engine oil.
Screw the new oil filter back onto the engine by hand, then use your wrench to give it an extra quarter turn for security. Once it’s in place, you’re done with your work underneath the car! Now, lower the car to the ground and locate the engine oil fill cap. Unscrew it and fill the engine with the required amount of oil.
After you’ve refilled the engine, use the dipstick to check whether it is the correct amount. If you need to add more oil, do so in small amounts until it reaches the correct level. Finally, replace the oil fill cap, and you’re done!
