Wiring two light switches from one power source is a simple and easy process that anyone can do with a little bit of preparation and knowledge. With the right tools and knowledge in hand, it will be a successful and rewarding DIY project.

Before beginning any type of electrical wiring project, it is important to remember to shut off all power going to the power source. Check with a multimeter that all power going to the power source is, indeed, turned off in order to avoid hazardous situations. Failing to do this could result in serious injury or death.

The first step in the wiring process is to run a cable from the power source to the first light switch, and then from the first switch to the second switch. When using sheathed cable, strip away about one inch of the cable in order to prepare for the next steps. After this is done, push the stripped sheathing into the electrical box and then connect the wires to the receptacle that is issuing power to the switches. Again, strip off an inch of the wires before attaching them to the green ground and securing it with a screw. Attach the white wire to the silver terminal and the black wire to the brass terminal.

Next, cut a six inch piece of black wire and strip each end. This will be used on the second switch, so reserve it and move on to the first switch. Twist all the bare wires together and then cap them off securely with a wire nut. Move on to the second switch and repeat the same steps on it. Once this is done, attach the white wires together at both switches and then cap them off with a wire nut, just as was done before.

Finally, attach the black wires coming in from the receptacle to the outgoing black wire and the second piece of black wire that was reserved from the earlier step. Securely cap it off with another wire nut, create a U shape with the black wire, and attach it to the switch with a screw, making sure that it is tightened securely but not over-tightened.

It is essential to understand each wire before attempting any wiring project. Understanding how to wire two light switches from one power source may seem complicated, but is actually quite simple with patience and knowledge. Following the steps above from start to end, double-checking each step along the way, will lead to a successful and rewarding DIY project.
