Step-by-Step Guide to Safely Wiring a Dishwasher Pump for Homeowners

Installing a dishwasher pump is essential in keeping the appliance running efficiently. Secondly, make sure the dishwasher is connected to a dedicated wiring system or circuit. This will require a circuit breaker. If you’re changing an existing breaker, it should be the same amperage as the one previously used. If you’re installing a new one, a 20 amp or 15 amp breaker is typically recommended.

Third, run a 2- wire cable with ground from the breaker panel to the location of the dishwasher pump. To connect the cable to the pump, drill a 1 ½ inch hole in the bottom part of the cabinet where the dishwasher is mounted. Once the hole is drilled, be sure to cover the cables using the recommended circuit conduit in accordance with local codes.

Fourth, strip ½ inch from the black and white wires on both the cable and the wiring harness. Connect the black wires together with a wire nut. Connect the white wires together the same way. Finally, hook both the bare copper wires to a ground screw in the harness, then tuck the wires in carefully and make sure there are no exposed parts.

After that, label the circuit breaker with “dishwasher” so you remember which device is connected to it. Then, remove 6 inches of sheathing from the wires, strip 1 inch of insulation from the black and white wires. Once the wires are ready, insert the cable into a knockout at the side of the breaker panel and clamp it tightly.

After that, connect the black wire to the screw on the circuit breaker. Connect the bare wire to the grounding bus bar and the white wire to the neutral bus bar. Finally, snap the breaker in place and tuck the wires nicely into the panel cover. Fasten the cover screws and turn on the main power supply and the water supply.
