Secure Your Ride and Finish Your Motorcycle with Exhaust Wraps: A Step-by-Step Guide
Installing an exhaust wrap on your motorcycle is not only a quick and easy way to help protect you and your bike, it will also make the muffler pipes look brand new. A wrap will insulate the pipes and prevent them from getting too hot, while also improving the overall look of your motorcycle.
It may take a few hours to install the wrap, but it is worth it when taking into consideration the added protection you’ll get. To get started, you will need to use the correct sized wrench to remove the exhaust pipe on your motorcycle from the engine. Once the pipe is off, use a soft cloth and some soapy water to thoroughly clean the surface area of the muffler pipe. After the pipe is dry, clamp it in a place where you can easily reach around the diameter of the pipe.
Next, take a can of heat resistant paint primer and spray the entire surface area of the muffler pipe that you’ll be installing the wrap on. Refer to the directions on the can of primer and allow the primer to dry before continuing. Before installing the wrap, it’s best to soak the wrap in water for about 15 to 20 minutes to make it look more pliable and easier to work with. This will also allow the wrap to adhere better to the metal surface of your muffler pipe.
Then, begin wrapping the exhaust wrap around the exterior surface of the exhaust pipe. Overlap the previous wrapped section by three or four inches and make sure to make the wraps as tight as possible to reduce movement and air bubbles. To keep the wrap in place, you might want to use stainless steel or polished hose clamps.
Allow the exhaust wrap to air dry on the muffler pipe for about 15 minutes before reinstalling the exhaust on the motorcycle. Once the exhaust pipe is back in place, start the engine and rev it up for a few minutes. The heat from the exhaust pipe should quickly dry the wrap and cause it to bond and adhere to the muffler pipe.
Installing an exhaust wrap is quick, easy, and well worth the time if you want to ensure that your motorcycle’s exhaust pipes are protected. Not only will this make riding your bike much safer, it will also make those old muffler pipes look brand new again. Follow these simple steps to get started and keep enjoying the ride.
