Reviving an Old Fence for a New Pet: Essential Preparations Before Bringing Home Your Dog

The first step KB Alan took to ensure the fence was good as new was to salvage whatever he could from the current fence. He and his partner carefully used hammers, flat bars, and a reciprocating saw to carefully detach the existing, usable boards. Half of the existing boards proved to be secretly strong; a gift from the old fence. Step two was the most difficult. With the old fence post unlevel, the ground not even, and the wall not square to the fence, KB Alan and his partner had to come up with a creative solution. They decided to shove the old post plumb and used level to mark the spots for two eyescrews for a steel cable to stabilize the post.

Now with the reference post in place, the couple could measure and mark board and nail heights. The top rail was nailed down first, followed by a 2×4 that was cut to the level length of the post and nailed to the flat of the post. A jack stud was used to rest the top rail on and a bottom rail similar length was also nailed down. KB Alan also extended the fence three feet behind the wall for the Zeke’s safety. To finish, now that the rail was in place, KB Alan and his partner began attaching boards beginning with the straightest, plumbest board and working their way down. With new boards being used for the long stretch and reclaimed boards for the small area at the wall, the old fence was being transformed into a brave new playground for the new pup.

Once the fence was ready to go, the couple had to do the necessary cleanup. With the lawn being the pup’s playground, they had to make sure to pick up any and all splinters and nails to prevent any injuries.

KB Alan and his partner’s hard work and dedication paid off, their handy work now giving Zeke his own backyard paradise. The couple made sure Zeke not only has a safe place to peacefully roam around, but also a place for him to satisfy that curious spirit he possesses. It looks like Zeke has officially settled into his new home and has a lot of love, adventure and playtime at the new fence to look forward to.
