Revamp Your Kitchen Quickly and Easily: A Guide to Installing a Ceramic Tile Backsplash
Installing a ceramic tile backsplash adds an elegant and colorful touch to your bathroom or kitchen. Installing a backsplash is not that difficult; with the right tools and a bit of patience, you can complete this project and end up with a beautiful new look for your kitchen or bathroom.
Start this project by prepping the wall. Walls that are often filled with grease and food particles need to be cleaned thoroughly before adding the tile. Use degreaser and hot water, then rinse it off and let the wall dry.
Next, measure the backsplash twice and make sure to record the measurements. Using the backsplash measurements, you can determine the placement of the tile before making any cuts. Be sure to include the tile spacers when laying out the tile design, so that the cuts are accurate. Once you’ve determined the design of the tile, use a pencil to mark any cuts needed.
You’ll need to wear protective goggles and gloves so you don’t damage or hurt yourself during the installation. Use tile saw to cut the tiles, and for small and curved cuts, use the tile nippers to chip away until the shape is accurate. Once all the tiles have been cut, it is time to apply the thinset mortar.
Mix the thinset mortar in a bucket according to the package instructions and spread it out on the backsplash using a notched trowel. Be sure to apply the mortar in 2-foot sections evenly. Press the tiles firmly into place with the tile spacers in between each one. Wipe away any excess mortar stuck to the tiles using a damp rag. Allow the mortar to dry according to the package instructions. Once dry, remove the tile spacers and mix the grout as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Using a grout float, hold it at a 45-degree angle and spread the grout between each tile. Once done, clean the tiles several times with a grout sponge to remove excess grout. Allow the grout to dry according to the package instructions. Finally, use a damp rag to clean the tile again and dry it with clean rags.
You have now completed the installation and can admire your new tile backsplash. A ceramic tile backsplash adds value to your house and makes cooking and cleaning easier while at the time adding a punch of excitement to your kitchen or bathroom.
