Dispelling Misconceptions: The Facts Behind Auto Body Paint Repairs

Share

Removing auto body paint can be a challenging task as different vehicles can have varying panel types and age. It is important to consider what type of panel you are working with, as well as if it has already been refinished in the past, to ensure you use the right method and avoid any problems. Older vehicles, such as classic cars, could potentially have multiple paint layers and body filler, so it is often best to remove all of the old paint and filler and start with a fresh, metal panel.

For the first method which involves using paint stripper, it is best to use a metal tin to pour .25 liters of paint stripper for each individual panel you want to remove paint from. It is not recommended to use plastic containers as the paint stripper can eat through them quickly. Place a frame of two-inch masking tape around the edges of the panel you are working on, and use paper and multiple layers of newspaper to prevent the stripper from reaching adjacent panels. Once it is connected, use a paint brush and coat the panel with two thick layers of paint stripper, allowing 15 minutes between layers.

Once the paint begins to lift from the panel, use a metal scraper to peel off the old paint and body filler. If it has multiple layers or the paint is stubborn, more coats may be needed. Wipe away all traces of paint stripper with a clean cloth and copious amounts of water. Remove the paper and masking tape, then use a P80 sanding disc with a random orbital sander to finish removing edges of the old paint.

For newer vehicles that may still need paint removed from dented areas, use the same technique but with much less paint to remove. A P80 sanding disc attached to a random orbital sander can be used to work around the area to be repaired and approximately two inches of paint removal beyond the repair to ensure enough body filler can be applied.

When dealing with auto body paint, it is important to use the right method for the panel type and age in order to avoid any problems. Use caution when handling paint stripper and always wear gloves and gauntlets to avoid contact with the skin. On newer vehicles, it is usually not necessary to remove all of the paint, as it is usually factory finished and new water-based products have been used. Work cautiously when removing paint to ensure a successful outcome, and to make sure all traces of the old paint are completely gone.
