Installing kitchen wall cabinets is a great way to create extra storage in a kitchen. This task is made easier by following the correct instructions. Part 3 of this installation guide covers the details of the finishing work that should be done after installing kitchen wall cabinets.

Once the cabinets are in place, begin with the trim. Measure the length and height of the cabinets and cut the trim molding to fit, allowing for a ¼-inch allowance. Apply a constructive adhesive to the back side of the trim before attaching it to the cabinet edges. Hammer in small finishing nails to secure the trim.

If hinges were not installed with the cabinets, they must be added at this point. Place the hinges on the areas marked for them, which will likely be marked by small holes. Screw one side of the hinge onto the cabinet frame, then repeat this process for each hinge on the cabinets. When all of the hinges are attached to the frame, screw the other sides to the cabinet doors.

If the hinges need to be adjusted, you may need to chisel a portion of the surrounding area to sink them down. If a door isn’t closing properly, shim the hinges up to help align the door to its frame. Use a putty paste to fill any holes created by chiseling or shimming. After allowing four hours for it to dry, sand the area until it is smooth.

Finally, the cabinets should be painted or stained for protection and aesthetic purposes. When staining, start by sanding the cabinets and make sure to thoroughly remove all the dust or dirt created by sanding. Apply the wood stain following the grain of the wood and let it dry. Apply a second coat and allow it to dry before finishing with a third coat and not sanding. When painting, cover all handles and fixtures with painter’s tape and wear safety gear.

These finishing touches are necessary to complete the look of a kitchen with wall cabinets. Poorly installed trim or an unfinished door could be a distraction rather than an asset to the kitchen. By following these instructions, you’ll ensure that the overall look of your kitchen wall cabinets is polished and complete.
