Mastering the Basics: Installing Tongue & Groove Paneling for Beginners – Part 1

Installing tongue and groove paneling is an easy and straightforward task that requires a few simple tools and materials. Not only does it bring a classic and rustic look into the home, it can last for a lifetime if done correctly. Whether you choose to use paneling materials specifically designed for walls, or tongue and groove hardwood flooring, read on for a step-by-step guide to installing tongue and groove paneling.

Step 1: Measure and Purchase the Right Amount of Materials
First, measure the heights and widths of the walls you wish to cover, remembering that tongue and groove paneling can be used to cover even the entire height of the wall. Multiply the height and width of the walls to determine the square footage you need to cover. Then, purchase approximately 5 percent more materials than you plan to use to allow for mistakes and damaged pieces.

Step 2: Stack and Acclimate

After purchasing the materials, stack them flat on the floor in the room where they are to be used, and leave them there for at least 2 to 3 days but up to a week is even better. It is important to acclimate the wood to the conditions in which it will be kept, particularly the temperature and the humidity of the room. This allows the moisture in the planks to stabilize, reducing the risk of the wood warping, shrinking, or puckering once the boards are on the wall.

Step 3: Install Furring Strips
If the walls you intend to panel are unfinished, you must first install a layer of drywall or plywood over the studs. The drywall provides more rigidity and support. Then, to allow for vertical plank installation, you must install horizontal furring strips directly over the studs using either nails or adhesive. If you choose to install your paneling horizontally or diagonally, however, furring strips are not necessary as long as the planks will cross the studs.
