Master the Technique of Lacquer Painting with These Easy Steps
Applying lacquer paint is quite different than using other types of traditional and latex-based paints. It is a little more toxic, so you want to make sure to take all the necessary safety precautions when using lacquer paint. Here’s how to properly apply lacquer paint to get a hard, shiny finish.
First, position a drop cloth underneath whatever you are painting and make sure to have proper ventilation by painting in an area with fresh air. Additionally, you should consider wearing a respirator, gloves and safety goggles for extra protection.
Next, make sure whatever you are painting is clean and free of dirt and debris. If you’re working on a wood project, sand the surface until it is smooth. Priming is also key as it increases the chances of the paint job looking its best. Choose a lacquer primer and make sure it is the same type as the lacquer paint you are using.
When it comes to the actual painting process, you want to apply the lacquer paint in long and even strokes. If you’re using a brush, make sure the strokes go in one direction. For spray paint, depress the button slightly to the left of the object and then spray left to right, stopping slightly beyond the right edge of the object. Depress the button again and spray from right to left. Continue with this on/off, left/right spray motion until the object is completely covered.
Make sure to leave enough time for the paint to dry before moving on. Weather conditions may affect drying time, so plan accordingly. Once the paint is dry, sand the surface for a smoother finish. After this step, you may choose to apply another layer of lacquer paint.
The last step is the clear coat. This is the finishing coat that will seal your paint job and give it extra shine. Apply it just as you have the lacquer paint and primer and wait until the clear coat is completely dry before finishing up with a clean cloth.
Following these steps should ensure your lacquer paint job looks its best! Remember to use priming and sanding to your advantage and don’t forget to make sure the surface is clear of dirt and dust. Also, always read the directions of the lacquer paint for any other safety precautions or necessary application steps.
