Using a clamp meter is a quick and easy method to take accurate current or amperage readings when working with electrical AC circuits. It is important to use the device properly, without compromising safety or the accuracy of the results. The clamp meter basically works by inducing the current being measured into a ferrite core, which when connected to a transformer, will reduce the measurable current to a proportionally lower output. Here is a step-by-step guide to properly using a clamp meter.
Before using the meter, make sure the exterior casing is not damaged and that the leads are undamaged and covered with insulation. It is also essential to make sure industrial-grade safety gloves are worn when handling a clamp meter.
First, remove the probes from the meter. Then turn the meter on by turning the dial. Depending on the type of meter, it may have a DC function settings. If so, use this setting when measuring DC current to remove DC offset from the readings for more accuracy. Set the measuring range of the meter to the highest setting possible.
To measure the current, open the jaws with the release, then wrap the jaws around one of the two conductors through which the current is being measured. Next, gently close the jaws, and take the measurement displayed on the meter’s readout. If the reading is low, such as 0.5 A or lower, use an AC setting, as these are more accurate for low readings.
Repeat steps #1.6 through #1.8 until sufficient readings have been taken and the current in the circuit calculated. When the testing is done, turn the meter off, disconnect it from the circuit, open the jaws with the release lever, and put it away.
Another important detail is to ensure the wires involved in the testing are live. Circuit should be disconnected from their source and high voltage capacitors discharged before testing continuity or diodes for extra safety. Care must also be taken to always handle or move wires with insulated tools.
The meter should never be used in a high heat, Humidity, or magnetic field. The batteries and battery indicator should also be checked before use and the meter should be turned off and the batteries removed when not in use and it should be stored for an extended period.
