Master the Art of Installations: Basic Steps for Installing Vaulted Ceiling Crown Molding.
Installing crown molding on a vaulted ceiling requires a bit more complex cutting and measurements than regular ceilings. Although it is a difficult job, with the necessary tools, angle theory, and scaffolding, it can be done quite successfully.
The first step to install vaulted ceiling crown molding is to measure the height of the chosen crown molding. This is measured from the ceiling down the wall, marking where it will fasten. Then, use an angle-measuring tool to find the requisite angles on the walls at the ceiling level. It is important to note each angle’s measurements, as well as whether they are inside or outside corners.
Next, you’ll need to measure the length of each of the pieces of crown molding. This should be taken at the level marked on the wall. Use an electric miter saw to cut the molding. To ensure that each cut is precise, you can use a plank to mount the molding on the saw. Alternatively, there are special crown-molding jigs available that can be used for this. An inside corner can be cut with the first piece cut straight, and the intersecting piece cut at 45 degrees and then undercut with a coping saw to fit over the first piece.
Once each piece of crown molding is cut, attach them to the wall with a nail gun. If there is a long wall, you may have to “scarf” two pieces together at the center of the wall to get a tight fit. To do this, undercut each piece at equal and opposite angles and slide them together against the wall. When each piece is attached to the wall, lightly sand the miter cuts to improve the fit before finishing. Clean with a tack cloth, then condition, prime, and apply the first coat of paint or finish before attaching it to the wall.
Fill any gaps in the miters with spackle and sand it once it’s dry. You can then apply the final finish coat. Once the painting is complete, admire the end result and enjoy your DIY vaulted ceiling crown molding installation.
