Master Linoleum Installation With This Step-By-Step Guide!
Installing your own linoleum flooring is an ideal do-it-yourself project that can help you make your home more eco-friendly and provide your space with an affordable and durable flooring option. Linoleum is a rapidly renewable, all-natural, and recycled product that, when installed correctly, can last 30 years or more with minimal maintenance. To get you started, here is a step-by-step guide to installing linoleum flooring:
1. Begin by removing all baseboards and inspecting the sub-floor to make sure it is sturdy and level. Pull out any nails or staples that may eventually poke through your linoleum floor. For an uneven and rough surface, you will need to cover it with 1/4-inch plywood sheeting and place nails or staples every 8 inches.
2. Calculate the amount of linoleum flooring you will need for the installation by taking room measurements and adding a buffer of 10 percent. It is always best to have some extra material left over when making repairs or replacing damaged tiles.
3. Draw a chalk line from the center of each wall to the intersection of the lines in the middle of the room.
4. Place dry tiles on the floor, working from the center out towards the wall to determine the final layout. Make sure to cut any tiles as necessary to fit around the walls. Also, think about any pipes coming up through the sub-floor.
5. When you’re ready to start laying the tile, apply adhesive using a trowel in a circular motion. Once you have the adhesive applied, press the tiles firmly into place before moving on to the next. Keep applying tiles and adhesive in small five-foot square areas until the entire floor has been installed.
6. To ensure a secure installation, use a 100-pound floor roller. You can rent one at a tool rental center.
7. Finally, reinstall all baseboards and trim. After completion, you will have an eco-friendly and long-lasting linoleum floor that you have installed yourself – and this will save you time and money!
