Learn the Steps to Installing Ceramic Tile Underlayment for a Durable and Dependable Floor

Installing a ceramic tile underlayment is a great way to provide extra protection to your ceramic tile floors from cracking. An underlayment acts like a cushion, adding a sturdier base foundation and preventing damage to your tiles. There are a few steps you should take to ensure you properly install a ceramic tile underlayment for the best results.

First, you should layout the first sheet of cement board in the corner of your floor. Mark the edges with a pencil so you will be able to measure the following boards accurately. After that it’s time to spread a layer of thinset mortar. The mortar trowel has ridges on one side. Use this side to spread the mortar efficiently, making sure to press lightly and scrape across the sheet multiple times.

After the mortar has been spread, you must lay the cement board back down and fasten it in place using a screw gun and galvanized drywall screws. The screws should penetrate the cement board every 6 to 10 inches. Make sure to sink the screw heads just below the surface. Repeat this step for additional cement board sheets and use a jigsaw to cut them to size where necessary.

To finish the ceramic tile underlayment, you’ll need to apply mesh drywall tape over the seemed joints of each cement board. You can then use a flat trowel and thinset mortar to cover the taped joints. Make sure to leave the mortar to dry for one day before filling your ceramic tile underlayment with your ceramic tiles.
