1. Choose Your Mud Wisely: All-purpose mud is a popular choice for drywall finishing because it can be used for all three layers. You do have the option of using two layers of taping compound and one layer of topping compound, but it often creates a better bond when using all-purpose mud. Look for a product that is ready to use and not too thick for easy application.

2. The Right Knife for the Job: You will need three different drywall knives for the application of the drywall mud. The first layer should be spread with a 4-inch knife, followed by an 8-inch knife on the second layer, and finally a 10-inch knife on the third layer.
