Learn How to Keep Your Basement Waterproof with the Right Mortar Techniques

Waterproofing a basement is not an intimidating process; it’s an easy job if you take into account the few steps mentioned. Any cracks or defects in the walls should be addressed in order to properly waterproof the basement. Start by gathering the necessary materials for the job, such as the waterproofing mix, a trowel, a putty knife, work gloves, and a garden hose. First, use the putty knife to patch up any small cracks (about 1/8-inch or smaller) on the walls, and larger cracks should be cleaned up and patched with the waterproofing mix. The waterproofing mix should be mixed in a solution of one part cement and two parts fine sand, to a creamy consistency. Once the cracks are taken care of, the walls should be treated with an epoxy or latex waterproof mix, or a mixture of plain cement and water. Start at the bottom of the wall and apply the mixture in circular motions until the wall is fully filled and covered. Make sure that the wall is completely damp before applying the mix, and apply extra coats as needed. Ensure that the lower parts of the walls are completely watered after the first coat has dried.

In cases where the water is trapped against the exterior wall, a weep pipe should be installed. After chipping away the broken area, fill the void with the mortar mix and shape it into a cone that is bigger than the hole, with the small end locking into the hole. Allow the plug to set for a few minutes, and repeat these steps on all the necessary walls and floors.

Once all these steps have been followed, and once the wall and floor have been treated, you can then be assured that your basement is waterproofed.
