Learn How to Install & Stretch Barbed Wire Fencing for Maximum Security & Durability
Using a fence stretcher to tension barbed wire fence is an important skill to master when erecting a barbed wire fence. A barbed wire fence is mainly used to keep animals either inside or outside of certain areas and therefore, requires the right amount of tension. Too loose and animals could find their way through the fence, too tight, the fence may snap or, worse still, an animal could become entangled in it causing serious, if not fatal injuries.
Before you start to tension the barbed wire, always ensure the fence posts are firmly and securely fixed in the ground. Also, have your heavy-duty pliers on hand as you will need them to loop the barbed wire around a corner or gate post to secure it in place.
The first step is to loop the barbed wire around the corner post, before turning it back onto itself and using the heavy-duty pliers to secure the wire. Next, place the end of the wire into the slot at the end of the fence stretcher before attaching the stretcher to the nearest pole.
To tension the wire correctly, begin to pull the wire using the ratchet until you reach the desired tension level. Too loose, and you will need to pull the wire further until it is taut. Once again, be wary not to over pull the wire as it could snap, wreaking havoc on the fence.
When you have reached the right tension, move on to the next strand of wire and repeat the same steps. With each strand, it may take a few attempts to get the right tension; when you are satisfied with the tension on each strand, take the loose end of the wire and attach it to the end post using the same method as before.
Finally, don’t forget to remove the fence stretcher from the wire!
Accurately tensioning a barbed wire fence is a process which requires caution and patience. Failure to tension adequately can have dire consequences not just for the fence, but for any animal that decides to trespass. By following the above steps, you will have no problems creating a fence that lasts and is safe to have around animals.
