Installing FRP Panels for a Waterproof, Durable Bathroom Wall Finish

Installing FRP panels in a bathroom is a great way to make the room more durable and resistant to mold, moisture and staining. Here are the steps for correctly installing FRP panels in the bathroom.

First, measure your bathroom’s walls length by width and calculate the area using inches. It’s best to draw a blueprint of your room and note the wall lengths and widths. Obstructions on the wall will factor into how many panels you need to purchase to cover each wall. You’ll also need to consider the divider pieces, caps and corner moldings.

When you know the exact number of panels you need, bring all the building materials and panels into the room. Put them in the room at least 24 hours prior to installation so they can acclimatize to the humidity and room temperature (at least 55 degrees F).

When you’re ready to install the panels, begin by nailing 16 penny nails as spacers between panels, leaving a 1/4 inch gap for expansion. Around the obstructions on the walls, use large pieces of cardboard to cut templates to fit the space. If whole panels don’t fit the remaining space, use a circular saw and diamond carbide blade or swivel shears to cut the panels to the correct size.

Apply adhesive 1/4 inch thick to the back of the panels, then attach them securely by hand. Use a laminate roller and press it flat to ensure even coverage. Clean up any adhesive that squeezes out between joints.

Cut the moldings to size and apply with adhesive, screws or nails after pre-drilling the holes. To ensure a waterproof space, use a bead of silicone caulk between the joints before installing molding or divider rails. Cut away any excess silicone to create a clean look.

For additional security, use rivets to attach the final panel in the series. This keep the final panel secure and in place.
