Installing Brick Edging for a Stunning Flower Bed: A Step-by-Step Guide
Installing brick edging is a great way to add a decorative touch to your lawn or garden. It’s simple to do, requires no mortar and is a great way to designate boundaries between lawn and garden or to simply frame a landscaped space. Before beginning, consider where the edging will go. It could be used to separate a garden bed from the lawn, or to add a border all around the lawn. Once you’ve decided on the location, use stakes and string lines to mark the perimeter along the entire route of the brick edging.
Next, use the spade or shovel to dig in at the point of the string line. Keep the trench only three to four inches deep; it’s important not to dig too deep. Remove the sod from the trench and use the garden hoe to push and pull the dirt into an even layer, eliminating any peaks or valleys.
Once the trench is prepared, spread about an inch of sand correctly across the entire length. Level the sand with a rake or by hand. The sand should end up about two inches below the surface of the lawn or garden.
To begin the layout, start with a single line of bricks and arrange them vertically with the sides of each brick flush up against each other so that the overall look is level. You may want to experiment with different designs, like a single basket weave row. When the design is in place, sprinkle a small amount of sand between the bricks and brush it in with a small broom or brush. This helps to solidify the edging.
For brick edging adjacent to a garden bed, fill in the remaining gaps between the bricks and the bed with topsoil. If the brick edging is next to grass, in time the sod will grow up against the bricks and take care of it. All that’s left is to admire your handiwork!
Installing brick edging is an easy job that can add a decorative touch to your garden or lawn. With a few garden tools, no mortar, and a bit of creativity, you can create a lovely brick border in no time. Whether it’s used to separate a garden bed from the lawn or add a decorative border all around your landscaping, it’s a great addition to your outdoor space.
