Improve Your Bay Windows with Easy Roman Shade Installation Tutorial
Adding window treatments to bay windows allows them to blend in effortlessly with your room decor while providing privacy and light control. Roman shades fit the curvature of bay windows, creating the coveted rippling effect that showcases its unique shape. Installing the shades correctly is important to ensure that they look their best and function properly every time. Here’s how to install roman shades on bay windows for an elegant finished look:
Start by taking measurements. Using a tape measure, check the width of each window section in three places (bottom, middle and top). Total up the measurements and take the average, then reduce it to the nearest 1/8th of an inch. This ensures that the shade is slightly narrower than the window frame, allowing it to fit better. Measure the length of each window bay (from the inside frame top to the bottom, left, center and right). Average all these lengths and add 1/8th of an inch to the measurement. Record this in your notepad.
You’ll need either three ready-made or custom-made Roman shades, or make your own in identical fabric and style. Begin with the largest Roman shade, which goes in the center panel of the bay window. From the edge of the window frame top, measure two inches inward on each side and mark with an “X.” Have an assistant hold the shade headrail up to the window frame near the “X” and draw a horizontal line along the top edge of the headrail. Measure and mark the distance from the horizontal line to the window glass, forming a right angle at the “X.” Do the same for the other side of the window frame and double-check that the measurements are identical for a level top headrail.
Position the installation brackets at the two-inch “X” mark, with one arm against the window and the other arm sticking out from the top. Drill holes and insert support screws to fasten the brackets firmly. Push the headrails into the brackets and secure with wing nuts. Finally, pull down each shade to see if they move properly.
Your bay windows will now have an elegant finish thanks to the perfect fit of Roman shades. Installing them correctly is key to making sure they look great and operate properly. With the right measurements and the right materials, you can transform the look of your bay windows with the rippling effect of Roman shades.
