How to Easily Install Ceramic Tile Backer Board for Durable and Secure Floors
Installing ceramic tile backer board is essential if you are looking to install ceramic tile over a wood subfloor. Without this backer board, the wood subfloor will not be provided with enough stability to properly support the ceramic tile, leading to potential cracks and breakage. It is important to take proper precautions and prepare your installation correctly before attempting to install any ceramic tile. Here are the steps in the installation of the ceramic tile backer board.
First, measure the exact dimensions of the room. This is important in determining how much backer board you will need for your installation. Divide the total square footage of the room by 15, as most backer boards come in 3×5-foot sheets. This will give you the number of sheets that you need to buy. You should buy an extra sheet to account for any waste.
Once you have all the materials you need, you can begin to install the backer board to the wood subfloor. Before doing so, it is a good idea to apply thinset. Thinset is an adhesive product that will help attach the backer board to the subfloor. Spread the thinset evenly with a trowel, then lay a piece of the backer board into the thinset. Make sure that the back of the backer board is fully covered by pressing firmly.
To attach the backer board to the subfloor, you can use either nails and a hammer or a drill and screws. Make sure to set a nail or screw every 8-inches around the perimeter of the board, 2-inches from the edge. This will provide the board with proper support.
When you reach the edges of the room, you may need to make some cuts to the backer board so that it can fit. Measure the size you need and then use a circular saw to make the proper cuts. Once all the pieces are in place, cover the seams between the pieces with fiberglass reinforced tape and another type of tape. This protects the gaps between the pieces and provides extra stability.
When everything is installed, wait at least 24 hours before applying any ceramic tile onto the backer board. Doing this allows the thinset to fully dry and harden, ensuring the backer board will properly support the ceramic tile. When you wait for the backer board to dry and you have followed all these steps, you should have successfully installed ceramic tile backer board.
