How to Easily and Safely Tighten Bolts with a Hydraulic Torque Wrench

Using a hydraulic torque wrench is essential for any project that requires a great deal of torque. This type of wrench is often required for industrial applications such as oil and gas rigs, pipes, and heavy industrial structures. With their powerful levels of torque, they can easily remove and tighten large bolts. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to use a hydraulic torque wrench correctly and safely.

1. Assemble the wrench correctly. When you receive your hydraulic torque wrench it will typically be dismantled. To assemble it, you will need to attach the hose to the power pack and then to the wrench itself. Make sure all of the fittings are tightened properly and secure a solid connection between all three components. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully and prepare the wrench in the exact order specified.

2. Set the torque level. Different models of hydraulic torque wrenches have adjustable settings. For any project, you’ll need to ensure that the correct torque setting is set for it. You can often find a torque conversion chart to assist you with this. For projects with no specific torque setting recommended, start with the lower setting and work up from there.

3. Place the wrench on the bolt head. Check your user’s manual for instructions for your specific model because the wrench’s positioning may look slightly different across makes and types. One side of the wrench should have a large hole in the shape of a hex bolt or nut—place it on the head.

4. Align the gasket (if necessary). Depending on the project, you may need to attach a gasket to the two pipes before beginning. Make sure it is properly aligned and seated before connecting the two pipes.

5. Activate the hydraulic wrench. Turn on the wrench, and (unless already done by machinery) press the two pipes together as far as they can go. Then, you’ll need to adjust the pressure regulator in order to secure the desired torque level. Again, you’ll need to be familiar with the specific model of hydraulic wrench you’re using in order to ensure correct usage.

6. Allow the wrench to reach the correct torque level. Once it does, the wrench will automatically stop and you can then remove it from the bolt head and fit it back on the power pack.

Hydraulic torque wrenches are incredibly powerful tools that you need to know how to use correctly in order to prevent injury or property damage. Always be sure to read and understand the instructions for power tools and machinery prior to operation. With this basic guide, you’ll now be armed with the knowledge you need on safely utilizing a hydraulic torque wrench.
