How to Create Professional Finishes with a Texture Spray Gun

Using a texture spray gun can be an intimidating task for someone who’s not used to this type of equipment. But with the right preparation, you can be confident and successful with your project. A texture spray gun is used for spraying drywall compound or textured paint, and it usually requires a special spray gun for such tasks. Here’s a guide on how to use a texture spray gun properly and safely, to achieve the look you want with your space.

First, prepare the area you intend to spray, by protecting furniture and items in the room. Move all pieces of furniture out if you can, or cover them completely if unable to move. Then lay drop cloths over the entire floor, and cover the ceiling, doors and other surfaces with plastic sheeting and masking tape. Wear protective gear, such as your dust mask and safety goggles. Cover your hair with a cap and wear old clothing that you don’t mind throwing away afterwards.

Make sure the drywall compound is properly mixed with the right ratios of water and compound, in a bucket, before you begin. If you’ve ever done this type of job before, you know that lumps in the mixture will clog the nozzle on the spray gun. To achieve the best consistency, use a power mixer attachment on a drill.

Once you’ve become familiar with the texture spray gun’s function, pour the mixture into the gun’s hopper. Position the gun about three to four feet away from the wall or ceiling you want to spray, and, pressing the trigger, begin your work.Spray from the top of the wall downward, starting from one corner and moving to the other corner. Fire off the spray in different directions, keeping the nozzle moving to avoid concentrated areas. With a ceiling, work from a stable stepladder, always taking safety precautions.

If the texture spray is thicker in some areas than you wanted, take a knife and carefully remove it. Be careful not to smooth the texture out too much. Once you’re done, the sprayed areas must be given ample time to dry before you can begin the clean-up process.
