Home Security DIY: Installing Window Sash Locks for Added Protection

Installing window sash locks can be an important part of keeping your home secure. These locks can prevent intruders from easily entering through an open window and also provide an extra layer of protection for small children who could potentially fall out an open window. Although different window sash lock designs exist, the same general steps are required for installation.

First, you need to determine the center of the lower sash (the part of the window frame that slides up and down) and mark this spot with a pencil. Most sash locks come with a template, but if yours doesn’t, you can center the lock over the pencil mark and use it as a guide. Mark the locations of the four screw holes for the lock and for the part of the lock that slides into the stationary window frame.

Next, use your drill to make holes in the marks you made. Put the lock pieces in the appropriate location on the window sash and screw them in place with your screwdriver. Make sure the locks are securely in place and that they function properly, locking and unlocking as intended.

Depending on the types of sash locks you’re using, you may also need to apply a caulking compound around the lock to help seal the frame and keep air from coming through. Otherwise, you should be done with the installation process.
