Getting the Job Done Right: A Step-by-Step Guide for Installing Rubber Pavers on Concrete
Installing rubber pavers over concrete is an easy and effective way to give any area – from a patio to a garage – a softer and more aesthetically pleasing surface. Rubber pavers are lightweight, non-slip, and versatile and can be used to help protect surfaces from wear and tear associated with heavy traffic. Before starting this project, there are some basic steps to take to ensure success.
The first step is to prepare the existing concrete surface. Sweep away any dirt and debris and then use a hose to give the surface a good cleaning to remove mud, mold, and residue from oil or paint. Allow the area to dry completely before beginning. It is important to also allow the pavers you are using to acclimate to the local conditions for at least one day before installation. This will help prevent any last-minute expansion or shrinking. If the area has been recently poured, it is important to wait for the concrete to cure for about four weeks before starting.
To begin installation, the area should have a slight slope. To create this, dig a small trench around the area to be covered with a depth of about a foot. Next, add a layer of crushed stone and use a 2×4 to level off the surface. Fill in any holes with stone.
Next, you can choose to start either from a corner or the center. If starting from a corner, select the corner and assemble a row of pavers. The pavers can either be interlocking or pushed together snugly. When starting the second row, use a rubber mallet to tap half of a paver into the interlocking holes of the first row. The third row should begin with a full paver and the process should continue until the whole area has been covered.
Once the area is completely covered with pavers, it is important to install reducer strips around the perimeter to create a transition between the lower surface and the pavers. This will reduce tripping issues. Use a polyurethane caulk to do this and then make sure to fill any gaps between the pavers and pipes with the same caulk. Allow the caulk to dry completely before using the area.
Remember when installing rubber pavers over concrete, it is important to make sure the area is as smooth as possible for the best success. If the existing concrete is lifting or otherwise in poor condition, it is best to keep it uncovered. Following these instructions and being patient with the process will help make sure your rubber paver installation project is a success.
