Get Ready to Mow: Prepping Your Lawn Mower for the Spring Season
As the days get warmer and the first signs of spring arrive, owners of both push and riding lawn mowers need to start thinking about getting their mowers ready for use. Before you can grass cut, there are some key steps to preparing your lawn mower for the upcoming season.
To start off, your lawn mower should be properly cleaned of all dirt, grass and other debris that has collected during the winter months. Make sure the mower is turned off and unplugged before you begin. You don’t want to be using any sharp instruments to clean the machine. If a blade is heavily damaged or corroded, it will need to be replaced before mowing begins.
If you’ve owned your mower for a few seasons, it’s time to change the oil. The oil needs to be drained, the drain plug replaced and new oil added. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the recommended type of oil for your mower. Disposing of the used oil in the correct manner–either through a designated recycling center, or by following local motor oil reuse laws–is essential to protect the environment.
Another important part of mower maintenance is the spark plugs. Rust and corrosion can form around them, and you should inspect them each season. Even if you don’t replace them, the plugs should be removed and cleaned regularly to make sure your lawn mower is running correctly.
The blades of your mower also need to be checked and sharpened. Blades that are dull or chipped should be replaced. Otherwise, you can sharpen them with a metal file and make sure the edges are even. The height of the blades should also be adjusted each year – between 1 inch and 1.5 inch – to suit the types of grass in your lawn and the results you prefer for your landscaping.
Finally, inspect the belts for signs of wear and tear, dry rot and cracks. If necessary, replace them to avoid further damage.
By following these steps you can help make sure your lawn mower is in top condition, and by taking the time to perform this basic maintenance, you’ll ensure that your mower will give you optimal performance, improved fuel efficiency and a better looking lawn all season long.
