Freshening Up Their Hideaway: Tips for Replacing a Plastic Window in a Playhouse
Replacing a plastic window in a playhouse can be necessary when the window becomes damaged due to exposure to the elements or heavy use. After identifying the damaged window and taking measurements of it, you’re ready to go to the hardware store to get a replacement plastic window. With a few tools and some patience, you’ll be able to make the repairs yourself quite easily.
The first step is to remove the damaged window from the playhouse. Begin at the bottom corner and use a putty knife to loosen the frame. Tap the knife from the back with a mallet to make sure that the frame is loose from the window. Keep up the pressure until you reach the bottom of the frame. As you go around the entire frame, remove the pieces of wood trim that secure the window in place.
Next, take the old window along with you to the hardware store. There, you should be able to find a plastic window which has exact dimensions to the damaged window. It would also be a good idea to buy a second window right away, in case you have to make another repair down the line.
Now, using a paint scraper, clear the glue and putty that held the previous window in place. Once you have worked your way around the frame, use a damp cloth to wipe away all dirt and debris from the groove along the window frame. After this is done, use 200-grit sandpaper to smooth any rough patches that may be stuck along the frame where the putty is.
Take the new window and fit it into the frame. Make sure that it is a snug fit. Use your putty knife to apply wood putty along the edges of the window. Insert wood trim all around the window as well, to help secure it in place. Tap the trim into the putty with a rubber mallet for a secure fit. Once the trim is in, straighten the corners for a neat appearance.
Remove any excess wood putty that may have been left behind with the paint scraper. Finish used on the windows should match the rest of the playhouse windows, so use a wood-based finish with a paintbrush to give the repaired window a layer of protection from the elements. Allow the finish to dry prior to using the playhouse.
Replacing a window in a playhouse is made simple with the right tools and a bit of knowledge. Once you have finished the repairs, you may want to keep the extra window on hand in case of future damages. With the right maintenance, a playhouse window can be easily repaired and quickly turned into a safe, fun environment for kids.
