Engage Your Little Scientists: 4 Eco-Friendly Science Projects Using Recycled Materials!
Science fair projects can seem daunting, especially to younger kids, but using recycled materials to do an at-home science project can make it much more fun and interesting for them. It can also be budget and eco-friendly, making it an all-round win. Here are 4 great science projects your kids can do with recycled materials at home.
Tornado in a Bottle
This is a tried-and-true science project that not only teaches children the principles of wind and air pressure, but also looks cool when they are done. All you need are two plastic bottles, a little bit of water, and a funnel. Put the funnel into the neck of one bottle and use it to pour water halfway up the other bottle. Then fit the two bottles together, and when you swirl the bottles, it creates a miniature tornado swirling between the two!
Christmas Light Electricity
For this project, you can recycle old batteries, as well as an old string of Christmas lights. Show your child how electricity works by connecting the batteries to the lamp and then lighting up the arm. Ensure that you open the light bulbs beforehand and check if they are still working, as a broken bulb will not illuminate no matter what you do.
Shopping Bag Parachute
For this experiment, you can use plastic shopping bags to show your child how gravity, wind and propulsion interact with each other. Simply cut the edges of the bag and tie strings to it. Then, attach small toys or plastic container to the strings, and have your child propel the “parachute” with the fan. Do not attempt this project to create a (human-use)parachute – it should only be used with small toys.
Invisible Ink Trick
This is an easy science project that your child can do with ingredients they probably already have at home. With a cotton swab, half a lemon, a few drops of water, and a piece of paper, they can make an invisible ink that reveals itself under the heat of a lamp. The ink can be used to draw a message and encrypted until someone holds it up to the light – how cool is that!
These projects are all great for teaching your child about science, and at the same time, you can show them the beauty of reusing and recycling materials. They can have fun and learn all at the same time – so it’s a win-win!
