Efficiently Brighten Your Home: Step-by-Step Guide for Installing LED Recessed Lights
The first step is to turn off the electrical current going to the location of the recessed lights will be installed by flipping off the circuit breaker at the main control panel to that room. This is an important safety step to prevent electric shock or any potential fire hazards due to improper wiring.
The next step is to locate the ceiling joists by either using a stud finder or visually by sight. After finding the ceiling joists, trace the desired size and shape for the lighting fixture, then cut it out with either a drywall saw, drywall circle cutter, or a jigsaw with a plaster-cutting edge. It is important to create a trap for debris to prevent any possible fire hazards.
Following this, feed an electrical cable from the previous light fixture location to the newly cut opening and push the cable through the knockout hole in the LED fixture box. Lock the cable in place with a cable clamp and strip ¾” of insulation from the infeed wires. Connect the same colored wires between the fixture and the electric feed cable using wire connectors, making sure to connect the green wire with the green wire as well as ground the fixture to the box.
Once the wiring is complete, place the fixture into the location and rotate it until the mounting tabs engage. Afterwards, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions to install the fixture properly, as this may vary from one model to the next. Finally, restore the main power and test the recessed lights.
