Do-It-Yourself Guide to Installing Rubber Carpet Pads for Noise Reduction
Installing rubber carpet pads for soundproofing is a great way to reduce noise coming from within a space. Rubber is an effective material for absorbing noise and vibrations, making it ideal for soundproofing carpets. Here are the steps to follow when soundproofing your carpets with rubber carpet pads.
Before you start, measure the area of the carpet you want to soundproof and choose the size of the carpet pads accordingly. Make sure that you buy thinner rubber carpet pads as the thicker ones do not always produce better sound proofing results and can tear up more quickly. Closed-cell carpets are preferable for soundproofing, as they are more resistant.
The floor or the area need to be clean before you start, so remove dust and mop the surface. Cut the carpet pads to size and roll them up. Then, on the edges of the room where the carpet will be installed, use tack strips with small tacks on them. Install one nail every 10 inches. If you’re working with a concrete or stone floor, use adhesive to fasten the tack strips to the floor.
Now place the pieces of rubber carpet pads on the floor to cover the entire area, making sure that the waffle-shaped side is facing up. Join pieces of rubber carpet pads with tape so that they stay together and glue or staple the edges of the pads to the edge of the carpeted area. Make sure the carpet pads are tight and secure.
Finally, place the carpet over the rubber carpet pads and stretch it over the tack strips to secure it in place. Make sure that the edges of the carpet fit into the gap between the wall and the tack strips, and that the carpet is tight. You may need to use a power stretcher if it does not fit properly.
Once you have installed the rubber carpet pads for soundproofing, your room should be much quieter and the noise coming from within the space will be much reduced. For even better results, it is recommended that you also insulate the walls of the space. This will ensure complete soundproofing of the room.
