DIY Project: Step-by-Step Guide to Easily Install Stone Veneer around Porch Columns
Installing stone veneer around porch columns is an easy and cost-effective way to add a touch of natural stone to your home. With the right materials and tools, you will be able to safely and quickly install your stone veneer columns.
To begin, measure the desired dimensions of each side of the column and estimate the amount of roofing felt and metal lath you will require to complete the project. Use a utility knife to cut the felt and attach it to the column near the edges, using galvanized nails spaced six inches apart. Then cut the lath to the appropriate size with tin snips and attach it to the felt and column using galvanized nails placed at the same spaced intervals.
Once the lath and felt is properly in place, mix up a batch of type S mortar, to a consistency similar to whipped potatoes. Apply a thin coat on all surfaces, ensuring the coat completely covers the lath and has a thickness of about 1/2 to 3/4-inches.
Use a notched trowel to create grooves on the coat and let it cure.
Lay the individual pieces of stone veneer on a flat surface and plan out a good layout before sticking them to the surface of the columns. Wash them with water to remove any dirt or dust and protect your eyes and hands while cutting the stones with a grinder.
To begin, mix the stone veneer mortar in a bucket, to a consistency of thick mud. Now, take the mortaring trowel and spread the mortar onto a small area at the bottom of the column. Butter the back of the stone with mortar and position it onto the surface of the column, tapping it lightly with the base of a hammer. Make sure to hold it for a few seconds until it sticks, and then remove any excess mortar that oozes out of the edges. Continue in this manner, carefully filling any gaps in between the stones with mortar from a grout bag and brushing away any excess after 30 minutes. Finally, allow the mortar to cure.
By following these instructions, you can easily install stone veneer around porch columns with security and comfort. With careful planning, the right materials, and plenty of safety gear, you will be able to effectively and efficiently create the perfect stone veneer installation.
