DIY: How to Safely Change the Ballast in a Fluorescent Light Fixture
Replacing the ballast in a fluorescent light fixture isn’t as intimidating as it may seem. It is a relatively easy process that can be done by any do-it-yourselfer, as long as common safety precautions are taken. The ballast of a fluorescent light is an electronic device that regulates the flow of electricity to the bulbs. When it fails, it can cause the bulbs not to light up properly. By following some simple steps, the ballast in a fluorescent light fixture can be easily replaced.
The first step is to turn off the electricity to the fixture at the power breaker box and test the light switch to make sure the power is completely off. Next, remove the plastic shade from the light fixture. This is usually done by pushing both sides of the shade together to pop it free, though some fixtures require you to unscrew a fastener and others must be unhooked from the edges. Be sure to use care when handling the shade as it can break easily.
Once the shade is removed, turn the fluorescent bulb slightly to loosen it from the socket. It should slide out easily when released. Repeat this process for a second bulb if needed and be sure to put the bulb in a safe place as they can explode.
Next, locate the metal cover on the ballast and remove it by pushing the sides of the metal cover together or unscrewing the screws, depending on which type of fixture it is. Pull the metal cover down and set it aside. Cut the wires that hold the existing ballast into place and use a utility knife to strip about 1/2 inch of bare wire from each end.
Using a screwdriver, unscrew both side screws on the ballast and then remove it from the light fixture. Take the new ballast and strip the ends if not already done. Connect the wires, matching ground wires and black wires. Twist the wires together until a complete connection is made and put a wire nut over them, securing it with electrical tape. Finally, screw the ballast into place and reinstall the fluorescent bulb.
The last step is to replace the plastic shade and turn the power back on at the breaker box. Turn the switch on to see if the light works correctly. If the fixture lights up, the ballast has been successfully replaced.
Although not complicated, replacing the ballast in a fluorescent light fixture is best left to experienced DIYers familiar with electrical wiring and safety precautions. Many do-it-yourselfers can easily handle replacing the ballast in a fluorescent light fixture, but it is always recommended to consult with an electrician or a professional before undertaking the task.
