Discover the Unique Capabilities of Hand Axes and Hatchets: 5 Key Differences
With so many different types of axes to choose from it can be hard to know which one is the right tool for the job. The hand axe and hatchet are two types of axe that many people confuse, but there are a few key differences that should be taken into account.
Size is the first key difference. Hand axes are usually about six to twelve inches shorter than an axe and hatchets are half the size of a hand axe. The difference in length allows for different cutting angles and increased leverage for more difficult chopping.
The head of an axe and a hatchet also have distinct shapes. Hatchets usually have a smaller, narrower head with a large cutting blade. The axe head is larger, with a head that tapers slightly from the cutting edge to the back of the head. Along with size, the weight of the head also plays a role in how it will be used. An axe head is heavier than a hatchet, while a hand axe sits somewhere in the middle.
Design also plays a role in a hatchet’s purpose. True axes are never designed for hammering, whereas some hatchets come fitted with a hammer head on the back side of the axe head. Hand axes aren’t designed to be used as hammers.
The curve or angle of the shaft is also important. Hatchets typically have a shaft angle that places the head of the hatchet flush with the forward end of the handle, while hand axes extend out at almost a 90-degree angle. Additionally, metal handles are relatively common in hatchets, but almost never found on hand axes.
The last difference pertains to portability. Hatchets are designed to be much more portable than hand axes, making them easy to carry on the go. On the other hand, hand axes are designed to be taken to your campsite and left behind.
These five differences are some of the most important to take into account when considering whether a hand axe or a hatchet is the appropriate tool for the job. Knowing the difference between the two can make it easier to choose the right axe and get the job done right.
