Installing a new fiberglass door is a great way to reduce the energy loss in your home. While the process may sound complicated, if the steps are followed properly you will have an attractive, well-functioning door.

Begin by removing the old door. Using a pry bar, remove any wood trim that is covering the frame. This removes the appearance of the frame from view. Once the trim is removed, use a reciprocating saw to cut off any nails that are attaching the frame to the house itself. The frame can then be removed.

Door frames and doors come in standard sizes, but it’s important to make sure the frame fits for your specific door. Measure the size of the chosen door compared to the frame of the house. If the frame is larger than the door, add planks of plywood to the house frame in order to make it the right size.

Next, add a waterproof seal between the frame and door. Attach foil tape above the door and fold it in place. Do the same thing around the sill of the door. Cut the corners and add a strip of aluminum tape at the top of the sill. Attach the sill support to the frame and cover it with cedar trim and nails. Then, apply a silicone sealant to the edges of the sill to block out any moisture.

Now is the time to place the new door onto the silicone sealant. Nail the door in temporarily. Check the door with a level to make sure it is evenly placed and square with the frame. Make sure the gaps between the door and frame are uniform. Close and open the door to test the fit. Once everything is aligned and secure, nail the frame from the outside. To finish the job, place flanges from galvanized nails and cover them with aluminum tape. Install the wood trim around the door both inside and out. Finally, add the hardware and your new fiberglass door is ready to be used.
