One of the most fun and creative ways to spruce up your home for free is by using items that would have otherwise gone to waste. By salvaging materials from around your neighbourhood, including cinder blocks, wooden crates, and pallets, you can transform your home without spending a dime.

Cinder blocks (also known as concrete blocks) are very popular in exterior building projects, from foundations to retaining walls. However, cinder blocks are also great for interior projects and can easily be repurposed for a variety of uses. Used as legs for a desk and stacked together for instant shelving, cinder blocks can be painted, mismatched, and arranged in a variety of formations to create unique furniture pieces. Cinder blocks also come with extra storage space in the form of their inner holes! You can fill them with dirt to make unique planters or even raised garden beds, or to make an outdoor bench or fire pit.

Wooden crates are another great free find. Unlike cinder blocks, they may not be as sturdy, but this makes them more useful in other ways. For instance, they can be screwed into walls to increase storage and create shelving or a TV console. Alternatively, they can be stacked together to create fascinating furniture pieces – end tables, coffee tables, and desks. Wooden crates turn any room into a farmhouse-inspired space, and for extra pizzazz, they can be painted with style.

Finally, wooden pallets, which are commonly used in shipping, can usually be found next to garbage bins at the back of stores. Stores will often have piles of wooden pallets just waiting to be taken away for free. Pallets can be combined with cinder blocks to make an outdoor dining table (with the pallet providing a table surface and cinder blocks creating the legs) or are perfect for creating a privacy fence or trellis. You can even redo a whole fence with them! Wooden pallets can also be used as wall art or a mattress foundation.

Renovating your home doesn’t have to break the bank. With a little bit of imagination, skill, and free materials scavenged from around your neighbourhood, you can transform your home quickly and cheaply. So if you’re looking to upgrade your décor without spending any money, consider cinder blocks, wooden crates, and wooden pallets; they are the perfect trifecta for DIY projects on a budget.
