Build Your Dream Wardrobe: 5 Simple Steps to Make an Attractive Storage Cabinet
It can be easy to feel daunted by the thought of building a wardrobe storage cabinet on your own. You don’t have to be a carpenter and you don’t need specialised tools or a lot of money to get the job done. With a bit of effort and the right supplies, anyone can build their own wardrobe storage cabinet in five simple steps.
Step 1: Start by making a frame. Measure and mark the size of the pieces you need to make your frame, then cut them with an electric saw. Attach the pieces together with screws and graft it to the wall in a temporary fashion. You can make the frame any size you want and are limited only by the amount of space available in the room and the size of the items that will be stored inside.
Step 2: Create the sides and back of the cabinet. Use the dimensions of the frame to figure out what size the side and back pieces need to be before cutting them. Make sure they are made of a material that fits in with your room’s décor, or you can choose to stain the wood later on.
Step 3: Cut and shape the door opening. You don’t have to make your own doors and you can use ready-made ones available at most home improvement stores. However, if you want to take the extra step to make the doors yourself, you’ll need a router with various types of bits.
Step 4: Fix the door. Mount hinges on the wardrobe and the doors and secure them in place with screws as per instructions (included with the doors). If you make your own doors, instructions for this step will be included with your router set.
Step 5: Complete the look. If you’re staining the wood, remove the wardrobe from the wall and take it to a well-ventilated area. Lay down drop cloths or newspaper, put on gloves, and apply your choice of stain with a brush. Once dried, be sure to use a sealant liquid to protect both the wood and the stain. If painting is your preference, apply the sealant liquid first and then prime and paint as normal.
Once the wardrobe is complete, securely fix it to the wall according to your chosen material. You can also add extra features such as hanging rods, drawers, dividers, or shelves to the cabinet if you wish.
Building your own wardrobe storage cabinet might take a bit of effort, but with these simple steps, you’ll soon have an additional storage piece that fits the exact dimensions of your room, style, and storage needs. Once it’s finished, you can proudly enjoy the sense of achievement from making it yourself, as well as the extra space it provides you with.
