Bring Life & Style to Your Home: A Step-By-Step Guide to Installing Decorative Wall Paneling
Installing decorative wall paneling is an easy and inexpensive way to freshen up the look of a room. With a few easy steps, you can give the walls a fresh new look with an updated style. While a professional installer can complete the job, you can accomplish the project yourself in a weekend.
To begin, let your panels adjust to the air temperature and moisture level in the room. You will want to place them in the room a few days before starting the installation. This will allow them to become conditioned to the climate and prevent any cracking or damage with the installation.
Use a fine grit sandpaper to sand down any rough or high spots on the panels. This will make the surface flat and smooth for a seamless look. If your panels are painted, sand them down and then add primer to the panels before you begin.
Using a stud finder, scan and mark the locations of the studs in the walls. This will allow you to secure your paneling for extra support. Along with the studs, you will want to place bracing at six-inch intervals over the walls, which can be nailed or screwed into the studs.
Once you’ve found the studs and added bracing, place your first panel onto the wall and secure it with finishing screws. Be sure that the head of the finishing screws are set beneath the surface of the panel. Do the same with the second panel, allowing an 1/8 inch clearance between the panels. Work your way around the wall in this manner until all the paneling is securely in place and without any unfilled gaps.
To complete the look, add molding along the edges and joints of the panels. This will cover the cut and transition points between the panels for a seamless transition. With a finishing touch, the final results of your hard work will be a completely refreshed look to your walls.,
