A Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Truck Body Repair Panels
Installing truck body repair panels can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. There are several variables to consider when replacing a truck panel and this article will cover the general principles of how to install one.
When dealing with truck body repair, most panels fit in similar ways. However, it is important to recognize that different makes and models of trucks may have minor variations in their devices and hardware. Typically, fenders mount to the body at several points recommended by the truck manufacturer.
When you have a new fender, it should come with all the necessary hardware for installation. To start the truck body repair, place the fender on the truck without attaching all the bolts. To ensure a good fit, loosely screw the nuts on the bolts located on the cowl and the top of the core support. The fender should be relatively adjustable to your liking.
To make sure the door can close properly, close the truck door and adjust the fender accordingly. The gap between the fender and the top of the truck door should be consistent in order to fit properly. To achieve this, you may need tools such as a feeler gauge. Take measurements before you loosen the cowl bolt to adjust the gap. You may also need to push or pull the fender to get the desired result.
Once you are happy with the fit, you can tighten the cowl bolt and the bolt at the top of the core support. Move on to applying the nuts to the fender bolts and hand-tighten before using the socket set for a more secure fit. Inspect the fender and make sure it aligns with the panel on the opposite side of the truck. If needed, use a pry bar to pull the fender out for a more secure fit, being careful to avoid denting or damaging the panel. To move the panel in, pushing lightly with your hip should do the trick.
The gap between the headlight and the fender should also be measured. Once everything is to your liking, take a final inspection before tightening all bolts. With that final step, you’ll have completed the truck body repair.
Although it may seem challenging at first glance, having the right tools and the appropriate information can make truck body repair accessible and simple. By following the necessary steps and maintaining safety precautions, you’ll soon be pleased with your results.
