5 Simple Steps to Installing Plastic Landscape Edging for Your Garden

Installing plastic landscape edging is a great and inexpensive way to define landscaped beds and keep out weeds, grass and pests. With some time and a few simple tools, you can install your edging in just a few steps.

Step 1: Determine how much landscape edging you need by measuring the length of the area you’d like to contain with plastic edging. Just use spray paint and mark the desired area before you measure.

Step 2: Shop for commercial, good-quality edging that is at least 5 inches wide. Buy some extra because it may come in handy in the future.

Step 3: Dig a trench deep enough (at least 4 to 6 inches) in which to install the plastic edging. Begin at one end and work along the line marking your area, making sure to loosen the soil before you put in your edging. Collect the soil in a wheelbarrow for later.

Step 4: Unroll the edging and cut it to length so it fits snugly to the line marking the desired area. Push it into the trench until only 1/4 to 1/2 of it is visible from the surface.

Step 5: Fill the sides of the edging with the soil from the wheelbarrow, making sure to settle it in tight and hold the edging firmly in place. If you have curves around the landscaping bed, drive stakes into the edging horizontally. Once all the edging is in place, survey for any holes or gaps, backfilling any that you find with the soil. Lastly, take a garden hose and water the edging on both sides to settle the soil securely.
