4 Cheap & Chic DIY Upgrades to Add Major Glamour to Your Home
When you’re looking for a creative and budget-friendly DIY project, head to your local dollar store. Not only can you pick up supplies for your projects, but you can also find plenty of inspiration for your next endeavor. Here are four dollar store DIY hacks that won’t break the bank.
Make a plant pot out of terracotta clay pots from the dollar store. Grab a couple of clay pots in various sizes, a sponge brush, acrylic paint, and/or other finds like glitter, ribbon and rhinestones. If you want, you can start with a base white coat and use stamps, Mod Podge and/or hot glue to decorate it. Keep in mind that the clay will absorb some of the water from the plant, so choose your decorations accordingly.
Transform plain white mugs into colorful pieces of art with supplies from your dollar store. You can use paint, markers, glitter glue – whatever catches your eye! For an elegant touch, you can even marble mugs with nail polish. Just add nail polish to warm water and dip the mug in. After you’ve let it dry, remember to bake the mug in the oven on 350°F for 30 minutes. To make sure your mug doesn’t crack, don’t remove it from the oven until it’s completely cooled.
Add a splash of color to any room with a dollar store glass vase. All you have to do is fill a clear glass vase from the dollar store with paint, swirl it around, and turn it upside down so that the paint covers the interior. After letting the vase sit for a bit, you can add ribbon for decoration and maybe even some fake flowers. Just remember not to fill it with water, as the paint will immediately start peeling off.
Turn boring towels into something special with dollar store ingenuity. You can buy dish towels, hand towels and sometimes even bath towels at the dollar store. Next, you can tassel them, embroider them, or give monogramming a go—just remember to avoid water-based dye as it may ruin your project. Or, you can use tea to give the towels some subtle color.
The best part about a dollar store DIY project is that you don’t have to limit yourself to traditional store items. Take a look around and get creative with the options in front of you. You may be surprised to find all sorts of items that could turn a plain object into something beautiful and unique. Have fun and don’t be afraid to get creative!
